Intent:
At Radbrook we believe that our curriculum should develop a love for reading, writing and discussion. We support children to read and develop comprehension skills and provide engaging texts to inspire and enthuse children's writing. We provide children with the tools they need and build on these each year.
Implementation
Across the school, children receive daily English sessions. We ensure that grammar, punctuation and spelling is revisited and developed throughout the year and across the school. In EYFS and Year 1, we use Read Write Inc to teach children phonics and to develop early reading skills. In Year 2, once children have successfully completed the Read Write Inc programme, and across KS2, we use Fred’s Teaching to further develop reading and comprehension and use Read Write Inc and Rapid Readers for interventions for children who are behind.
Our English curriculum provides fun, engaging and purposeful opportunities for reading, writing and discussion. We use cross curricular links to further immerse our children in their learning wherever we can. We believe in giving children real life experiences and invite authors and poets into school and take part in whole school special weeks including reading weeks and writing weeks. We also have annual MAT events such as Spelling bees, poetry recitals and public speaking competitions. To support parents with various literacy skills, we offer parent cafes where parents are invited into school to work alongside staff and their child.
Impact
Children are able to read and access texts for enjoyment and to further their interests. They will be motivated and enthusiastic when writing and equipped with all the tools and skills to be able to write independently and for various purposes/audiences. Parents will feel informed and equipped to be able to support their child's learning at home.
PHONICS
The school utilises the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonic scheme. The Reading scheme links with our phonics programme.
