Intent

At Radbrook we believe that the teaching of phonics plays a vital role in teaching children how to read, write and spell.  We believe that  phonics should be integrated into all subjects where adults model how to spell words and explore alternative sounds when modelling or writing with the children and children are encouraged to do the same.  We provide children with the tools they need to become successful readers and writers. Our aim is for children to be confident readers by the end of KS1. 

 Implementation

In EYFS and KS1, we use Read Write Inc to teach children phonics and to develop early reading skills.  All staff have received training in Read Write Inc and as a school we invest money in training materials that staff can access at any time.  Across the school children receive daily phonics sessions where children are split into smaller groups to receive more focused and targeted support.  To support parents with how to further help their child with their phonics and reading, we offer parent cafes where parents are invited into school to work alongside staff and their child.  We make sure children are assessed at regular intervals and are regrouped to enable progress.  We also track the children’s progress and provide interventions where possible to close the gaps.  

 Impact

Children are able to decode and read texts for enjoyment and to further their interests. They will be motivated and enthusiastic when reading and equipped with all the tools and skills to be able to read more independently. Parents will feel informed and equipped to be able to support their child's learning of phonics and reading at home.
